Dodd and Struthers Electrostatic Lightning Demonstrator – Des Moines, Iowa, c.1900

A rare and visually arresting Dodd and Struthers electrostatic generator, patented and produced in Des Moines, Iowa around the turn of the century. Housed in a handsome, dovetailed hardwood case with original stenciled glass front doors boldly lettered “Dodd and Struthers – Des Moines, Iowa – Patented.” Designed as a lightning rod sales tool, this hand-cranked influence machine was used to generate brilliant sparks and simulate lightning strikes in live demonstrations. Inside, a large rotating glass disk, paired Leyden jars, polished metal collectors, and adjustable discharge terminals remain intact. Twin crank arms atop the cabinet and a side pulley system drive the internal mechanism with flair. This piece reflects the intersection of Victorian science and American salesmanship—both a functional apparatus and a captivating display item.
