M4 Leather WWII Horse Gas Mask

M4 US Government Army Issue World War II, vintage 1941-1942 Horse Gas Masks are very scarce. Due to the large size, most were discarded after the war. Occasionally, one will pop up, but most are incomplete or in poor condition. The M4 Horse Gas Mask has 2 large filter canisters, one placed on each shoulder of the horse. It has a chest mounted pack, and a rubber mask for the horse’s muzzle. Flexible hoses run between the components, and leather straps keep everything secure to the horse. Horses (Cavalry) and Pack Mules were not as common in WWII as they were in WWI, making the Horse Gas Mask all the more rare. If you are a serious gas mask collector, consider the chance of finding another M4 Horse gas mask. Included is the signed canvas accessory bag and display horse head and horse goggles. The goggles (missing the straps) are something you almost never find. … $4400

1936 Draeger “O” Mask

This unique framed porthole mask was made by Draeger in Germany 1936. It was a simple and elegant design in a natural leather and mainly used for industrial purposes. Note the manual and central windshield wiper knob on the round glass. The wiper was used to clear condensation inside the glass.

Phrenology: Professor William Windsor’s Phrenometer

This item consists of briefcase containing a folding metal “phrenometer” (the phrenometer’s ring has various calibrations and markings), several booklets and papers relating to the philosophy and practice of Vitosophy as well as some annotated phrenological charts based on the analysis of clients. The briefcase was owned by a practitioner named Sydney Block, who lived in Royal Oak, Michigan. “Professor William Windsor, L.L.B., Ph.D.”( 1857-1922) was Vitosophy’s founder and the author of several books that put forth its principles and benefits. He was also a lawyer and, most importantly for our purposes, a phrenologist. Phrenology played an important role in Vitosophy. His phrenometer allowed measurements of the head to be taken that were later diagrammed and annotated. One might argue that his work was phrenology’s last iteration in 20th America. We have not previously seen a phrenometer nor can we find a record of one in any collection.

A site called “Kook Science” has the following information on Vitosophy

Vitosophy (portmanteau of the Latin vita, “life”, and the Greek sophia, “wisdom”: or “The Wisdom of Life”, “The Wise Way of Living”) is a medico-philosophical school and system of self-improvement, devised and promoted by William Windsor (and his Boston College of Vitosophy) beginning in the late nineteenth century, based heavily on phrenology and general understandings of human genetics (including eugenics) of the period. According to their own copy, Vitosophy is “a scientific system of Character Study and Delineation, a new system of Drugless Healing of all diseases, not surgical, and a complete system of Personal Culture according to standards of exact knowledge of character.”[1] Among other principles, the system teaches that there are seven temperaments — Electric, Magnetic, Alkali, Acid, Vital, Motive, and Mental — governing life, and one must abide dietary and lifestyle regimes compatible with these temperaments.

The Thermocap, which was invented by a Frenchman living in New York at the time, was an apparatus for the treatment of the scalp to regrow hair. Aloise A. Merke was awarded a patent on September 22, 1925 (originally assigned to the Thompson Barlow Company). The Thermocap was eventually produced by the Allied Merke Institutes, Inc. of New York. It was nothing more than a cap with a socket at the top in which any standard light bulb could be screwed. The bulb was supposed to relax and open the pores thus stimulating hair growth.

I believe this Phantom dates to the 1930s. It has a unique cast character head that is a bit primitive. Dental phantoms are devices used for practicing in dental universities. The dental phantoms resemble the anatomy of the skull and all the anatomical structures in the maxillofacial region. There are different type of phantoms depending on the exercise you want to create. Some of the phantoms contain only the cheeks, the gums and the teeth. Have you ever wondered the way dentists practice when making fillings or extractions before they make them in the mouth of a real patient? The use Dental Phantom. It would be a little tricky being the first patient of a student who has just studied theory with no practice. That’s what Eduard Oswald Fergus thought, a XIXth c. dentist who invented a gadget for practicing during this first stage, called “Dental Phantom”.
