Didiée Localizing Skull Compass
This is an archeologists field skull measuring device. It’s a very elegant tool that was well designed, compact and easy to use. it also folds flat for easy storage. We have it displayed on an old museum quality eggshell thin ceramic model. The display skull could be Neanderthal but can’t say for sure. On the underside there is a collector or museum code still hand lettered in red.
A very scarce Didiée localizing compass. Like the earlier and better-known Hirtz compass , the Didiée compass was used by surgeons in conjunction with x-rays to localize shrapnel, bullets and other foreign bodies in order to facilitate their removal. The Didiée had a more narrow focus, specially head and neck. It made it possible to go from the two dimensions of the radiological image to the three dimensions of the body.”
