This original hand blown example housed a reaction of zinc metal and sulfuric acid… This produced a flammable hydrogen gas. When the valve on top of the lower container was opened, a jet of hydrogen gas was released and burst into flame, catalyzed by platinum metal. We are not sure if it was just created as a curiosity or for some specific medical or science experiment. It dates from the late 1700 to the early 1800. The lenses are cut crystal and are almost a inch thick at the point. The glass and lens frame sit in wheels so the lenses n be rotated. I’m often asked… “what is your favorite object”… This is it!

Included in the gallery are examples of art created using this original device as inspiration.
